Founded by two brothers with a passion for cast iron, our journey in cast iron began with the question “Why don’t they make them like they used to?”  We pour our cast iron cookware using green sand castings—just like the most celebrated vintage cast iron manufacturers, Griswold and Wagner. Also like vintage skillets, the Field Skillet is a full pound light than most cast iron on the market, and machined smooth for a surface that seasons to a nonstick finish.

A well-seasoned cast iron pan achieves a natural non-stick surface made up of naturally occurring polymers from the oils you use on your pan—no harmful chemicals or engineered coatings. Our pans are 100% free of PFOAs and PFTEs—your skillet will arrive pre-seasoned with just three coats of organic grapeseed oil, so it’s ready to cook right away.

It is not necessary to season your Field Skillet in the oven. Your pan will continue to develop seasoning easily and naturally just by cooking and keeping the surface of your pan smooth and free of build up. Read more about our recommended cleaning process at the Field Method for Cast Iron Care & Maintenance, and more about seasoning here.

Field cast iron cookware is compatible with all stovetop burner types, including glass and ceramic induction ranges. Like all great tools, cast iron cookware gets better with time and use. To keep your Field Skillet in top condition:

  • Pre-heat on low for up to 5 minutes before you start cooking.

  • Clean according the Field Method for Cast Iron Care & Maintenance

  • Hand-wash only. Never in the dishwasher.

  • Towel dry and warm on the stovetop to evaporate moisture. Never drip-dry or store wet.

Most importantly, cook often!

How is smoother cast iron different?

Expand

Vintage cast iron pans, the type prized for their smooth nonstick surfaces, used to be finished by hand. Today, most manufacturers produce rough, pebbly skillets to save cost. That's not all bad—it just takes longer to build a shiny and truly nonstick seasoning.

Field Skillets use a machining process modeled on the best of vintage cookware, precisely dialed in to be as smooth as possible while leaving just a touch of texture on the cooking surface to hold a great seasoning.

Does Field cast iron come pre-seasoned?

Expand

Yes! We deliver a pan that is ready to cook out of the box with a great cooking experience. Our naturally non-stick cooking surface comes from three coats of grapeseed oil preseasoning. No teflon, no dirty tricks.

Like all cast iron pans, you will see the non-stick properties increase even more over time as you follow the tried and true seasoning rule: Just Keep Cooking!

Do Field skillets work on induction & electric stoves?

Expand

They do! We have a clever feature on all Field Company skillets—a heat ring! This is one of our favorite features: it’s both a reference to cookware conventions in a bygone era, and a clever way to meet the performance challenges of contemporary kitchens.

Our heat ring is designed to make sure the Field Skillet remains balanced as it heats up on glass or ceramic flat cooktops. At just 0.04” of clearance, it won’t interfere with cooking performance or lose any power from electric or induction heat elements, particularly since induction is activated through magnetics and iron is a magnetic element.

Isn't cast iron supposed to be heavy?

Expand

Field Skillets aren’t as light as throwaway nonstick cookware, but neither are they unnecessarily heavy. We spent years studying our favorite vintage skillets to find the perfect balance between lightness while maintaining enough bottom thickness for high heat searing and even cooking.

Our research found the Goldilocks zone to be 4.3 to 4.5 lbs for a 10 inch skillet. Anything above this zone only makes your pan harder to maneuver without adding cooking performance and anything below makes the pan more susceptible to warping or breakage. This weight is most similar to a Griswold skillet, one of our favorite antiques.

    10” cast iron pan

I’ve wanted to use cast iron for many years but the care and maintenance always held me back , well after many years I decided to try one and your cast iron looked different than all the others I looked at like lodge , after several weeks only using it every other day to cook eggs I do like it ,it cleans easy enough and I do use the field beeswax to oil it up after each use . I use organic grape seed oil( expeller - pressed ) and a bit of either butter or bacon fat , the eggs taste delicious but I’m still getting a fair amount of sticking , I do pre heat the pan before cooking . Hoping the seasoning kicks in before long . Ken

    Perfect size

This is the most used size of the Field skillets in my household. It is high quality, lighter weight than compared to the other high-end cast-iron skillet manufacturers and the finish is smooth.

It's our go to for pizza

Just recently talked my wife into cast iron. She has bad hands and wrists abs was worried about the weight. We decided to go with Field and, I'm happy to say, we continue adding to our collection. They are, simply put, incredible. The #8 is our most used, we love it, and the other skillets that we have. And, about every two weeks we do cast iron skillet pizza. Mmm, it's delicious. Love our cast iron and the recipes!

    BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL SKILLET!!

I have to be honest here. I purchased my Field Company 10 Cast Iron Skillet when the Black Friday Specials kicked in, so I've had it in my possession for several weeks now. Sadly, I've yet to cook in it. Why? Truthfully, I'm a little afraid. I really don't know what to do, and I don't want to mess it up. It is an artful masterpiece of skillet perfection and just looking at it gives me an extraordinary degree of satisfaction. I absolutely plan on cooking in it, but I'm slowly working toward the day that happens. I bought it based on Cowboy Kent Rollins' recommendation. He cooked on his right out of the box. I may follow his lead. Regardless, I'd say that purchase of a Field Company Cast Iron Skillet is a must. It is beautifully, masterfully finished in every way. This is definitely not your Grandma' s Lodge. I promise to post an update once it actually graduates from its display perch to my stove top.
